The informal sector plays a crucial role in Cape Town’s economic landscape. As a major employment sector, it provides affordable goods and services to locals while offering viable employment opportunities for traders. The significance of this sector extends beyond monetary contribution to the Cape Town GDP. It fosters meaningful livelihoods that can shape the well-being of locals. It is estimated that the informal economy’s value is 28% of South Africa’s GDP.

Driving Informal Economy Growth

As part of its Area Economic Development strategy, the city is focused on promoting local economic development with an emphasis on fostering the informal economy. In an effort to recognise the importance of the informal sector, the City of Cape Town has implemented several programmes aimed at supporting and managing the growth of this economy.

These include:

  1. The Informal Sector Support and Development Programme
  2. Markets Management Programme
  3. Informal Trader Leadership Development Programme
  4. Cape Town Summer Market
  5. Informal Sector Summit
  6. Informal Trading Compliance Inspection
  7. Informal Trading Infrastructure upgrades, repairs, and maintenance

These initiatives are designed to empower local entrepreneurs, enabling them to participate in the mainstream economy. By investing in infrastructure and support for these individuals, the city aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable economic environment.

R53m Boost for Cape Town’s Informal Economy

In a significant move, the council approved a R53m budget to boost Cape Town’s informal economy which began in January 2023. This substantial investment showcases the City’s commitment to nurturing the growth and development of the informal sector. By investing in infrastructure and support for these individuals, the City aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable economic environment. A portion of the funds were directed towards projects including the expansion and improvement of the council’s e-permitting system and infrastructure upgrades to various trading spaces, aiming to provide smarter, more dignified, and accessible trading areas.

Strengthening local communities

The City of Cape Town’s approach towards the informal economy represents a progressive model for urban economic development and ease of business. By recognising and supporting the role of informal trading in the local economy, the city is not only empowering economic growth but also enhancing the quality of life for its communities.
