As part of its Area Economic Development strategy, the city is focused on promoting local economic development with an emphasis on fostering the informal economy. In an effort to recognise the importance of the informal sector, the City of Cape Town has implemented several programmes aimed at supporting and managing the growth of this economy.

R53m Boost for Cape Town’s Informal Economy
In a significant move, the council approved a R53m budget to boost Cape Town’s informal economy which began in January 2023. This substantial investment showcases the City’s commitment to nurturing the growth and development of the informal sector. By investing in infrastructure and support for these individuals, the City aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable economic environment. A portion of the funds were directed towards projects including the expansion and improvement of the council’s e-permitting system and infrastructure upgrades to various trading spaces, aiming to provide smarter, more dignified, and accessible trading areas.
