The City of Cape Town is encouraging informal economy roleplayers, such as traders, to register for this year’s sectoral summit, hosted by the Economic Growth Directorate, which will be held on Tuesday, 21 June 2022.

The Informal Economy Summit is an opportunity for the sector to engage with the City on its challenges and to explore solutions together.

‘Since management of the informal economy moved to the Economic Growth Directorate at the beginning of this year, together with Area Economic Development (AED) officials, I have held several engagements with traders in areas across Cape Town. With this gathering, we can build on those engagements and bring people together from all over the metro,’ said Alderman James Vos, the Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.

The summit will include sessions that are pertinent to traders, such as addressing the impact of the pandemic, the review of the Informal Trading By-law, norms and standards for the provision of informal trading economic infrastructure and services, and how it relates to the informal sector, as well as workshops on relevant topics and industries.

‘We have had several positive and productive engagements with traders and other industry participants. This summit is an ideal moment to strengthen those linkages and for the City and these small businesspeople to reflect on the past few years, listen, and learn from each other,’ said Alderman Vos.
