Sod-Turning for New GrandWest Retail Development

City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, joined representatives from Sun International and other stakeholders for the official sod-turning ceremony of a new R650 million retail development at GrandWest.

“The development is expected to create approximately 1,200 construction jobs and around 2,000 permanent jobs once operational, while providing space for about 100 businesses,” said Vos.

Welcoming the investment, he said developments of this scale play an important role in driving economic growth, creating employment opportunities and expanding opportunities for local enterprises.

“Every new investment sends a strong signal that Cape Town remains a destination of choice for business. Projects such as this create jobs, support enterprise development and contribute to the city’s long-term economic growth,” he said.

Vos noted that he is spearheading the City’s Ease of Doing Business Index, which focuses on 10 business-facing indicators aimed at reducing red tape and improving turnaround times for business expansion and new investment projects.

He added that building a thriving economy requires both investment facilitation and demand generation. Through the Economic Growth Directorate, the City is rolling out its global This Is Cape Town place-marketing campaign across 55 cities on six continents, supported by strategic airline partnerships and city-to-city agreements aimed at attracting more flights, visitors and business travellers to Cape Town.

“While we work to make Cape Town the easiest place to do business, we are also actively growing demand for the products, services and experiences our city offers. More visitors and business travellers mean more customers for local businesses, greater economic activity and more opportunities for job creation,” said Vos.

He added that the GrandWest development forms part of continued private-sector investment in Cape Town and will strengthen the area’s retail offering while supporting economic activity across the broader region.
