With a career spanning more than three decades in U.S. diplomacy, business, and global leadership, Virginia Blaser lived and worked across Europe, Latin America, and Africa before ultimately choosing Cape Town as home. A former senior American diplomat, she led global teams, negotiated complex international partnerships, and directed $1B annual operations across politically and economically diverse environments.
A three-time CEO, founder, tech entrepreneur, and board member of CapeBPO, Virginia drives inclusive digital transformation and expands opportunities for youth and women in South Africa’s fast-evolving global services sector. Her career reflects a commitment to systems thinking, innovation, and what she calls “positive disruption” – improving how things work to create greater access, efficiency, and equity.
Bringing a wealth of international experience across diplomacy, development and business, Virginia has built her career bridging global leadership and innovation, applying diplomatic insight to entrepreneurial problem-solving. She served as acting ambassador in five countries, led major venture and technology initiatives, advanced the practical and ethical use of AI, and, as CEO of Blaser Global, advises organisations driving the next generation of global engagement. A published author and global speaker on leadership, she also serves on advisory boards including Tilting Futures and the Leadership Council for Women in National Security (LCWINS), where she strengthens women’s leadership pipelines and advances inclusive economic opportunity.
She believes that Cape Town’s strength as an investment destination lies in its unique blend of world-class infrastructure and progressive governance. “Cape Town already is a global city, it just needs to own that space,” she says. She also thinks its creative and cosmopolitan people can take it further: “The talent, the connectivity and the quality of life are unparalleled. The opportunity is to amplify that story and make sure the world recognises it,” she asserts.
Looking ahead, she’s most excited about the City’s potential to become a hub for responsible innovation where technology, creativity and social impact intersect. “We’re sitting at the edge of a digital revolution that can redefine access and opportunity for millions. Cape Town can lead that, but we must bring everyone along,” she says.
As an Invest Cape Town ambassador, she will use the next three years to connect global and local networks, linking investors, innovators, and policymakers to build sustainable growth and inclusive ecosystems. “My role is simple: help Cape Town walk into the room with deserved confidence. This isn’t just a city of beauty – it’s a city of ideas, courage, and limitless possibility.”
Outside her professional life, Virginia recently filed a US patent for an AI-driven system. “It’s about solving real problems in clever ways,” she says – a philosophy that mirrors her approach to leadership and her vision for Cape Town’s future.
