Cape Town’s Energy Services Platform Eases Electriciy Applications
Cape Town, South Africa – The City of Cape Town has taken another significant step towards making it the easiest place to do business with the launch of the Energy Services Applications platform.
This innovative platform, developed in collaboration between the City’s Economic Growth Department and the Energy Directorate, is set to revolutionise the way residents and businesses apply for new electricity connections.
For years, the process of applying for new or modified electricity connections has been a complex and time consuming task. It required extensive paperwork, multiple submissions, and long waiting periods for approvals. This inefficiency often posed challenges for businesses and residents alike. Now, with the Energy Services Applications platform, applicants can seamlessly apply for electricity connections online, track their progress in real time, receive instant quotes, and make payments.
The launch of this platform aligns with the City’s broader commitment to digitising its services and making transactions with the municipality faster and more efficient. “We have worked closely with our colleagues in the Energy Directorate to bring forth this game-changing initiative,” said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth “This app is a direct response to our goal of making Cape Town the easiest place to do business, removing administrative burdens, and enhancing service delivery.”
Alderman Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, officiated the launch event, underscoring the significance of this milestone. “One of the key deliverables of our Energy Mayoral Priority Programme is to develop a modernised, future-fit energy utility,” she stated. “Digitising our services is a crucial step in fulfilling this vision, ensuring smarter and more efficient service delivery that will only improve over time. As we continue to advance our energy strategy, we aim to create a business-friendly environment that benefits everyone.”
Alderman Limberg also referenced her recent address at the 17th Africa Energy Indaba, where she highlighted the achievements of the Energy Directorate within a short timeframe, despite facing complex regulatory challenges. At the heart of these efforts is a commitment to investing in power infrastructure, with a planned R4 billion investment pipeline between 2024 and 2027. The City is also focusing on diversifying energy sources to ensure long-term sustainability and energy security.
This launch is another demonstration of the City’s dedication to service excellence. Last year, the City released Volume 2 of the 营商环境 (EODB) Index, aimed at fostering economic growth by eliminating bureaucratic delays, digitising services, and enhancing overall efficiency.
