City congratulates 2024 GreenPitch Challenge winners
Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 GreenPitch Challenge, a GreenCape initiative. The City supports GreenCape which is recognised as a pioneer in South Africa’s green economy. The winners are innovative entrepreneurs who were tasked with presenting economically viable green economy business ideas. Read more below:
This GreenCape initiative offers a vital platform for green entrepreneurs to showcase some of the brightest minds in green innovation. Through innovative methods, their varied and imaginative solutions tackle significant environmental issues.
‘As a City government, supporting entrepreneurs to realise their dreams of establishing successful businesses is pivotal to so much that we do. They create jobs, grow industries, and boost economies. Their success is a success for us all.
These entrepreneurs’ ideas, inventions and persistence have the potential to change lives and build an economy that is sustainable and inclusive. Wishing all the winners a huge congratulations,’ said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.
GreenCape provides quality resources to assist investors, businesses and other interest groups working in the green economy.
‘GreenCape’s extensive body of research, cross-industry networks and practical backing of entrepreneurs and small businesses in the sector have been invaluable to the City of Cape Town and our efforts to work towards creating a city that is environmentally resilient for generations to come,’ said Alderman Vos.
The top three winners have been selected, from more than 150 entries. The winners are as follows:
First place: Dragonfly powered by Anisoptera develops cutting edge AI and IoT solutions for waste management companies to measure and manage their operations. By leveraging this technology, they are able to drive efficiencies within the sector, improving the quality of recycled materials going back into the circular economy, and significantly reducing the amount of waste ending up in landfills.
Runner up: Aero greens provides sustainable, soilless vertical farming systems housed in shipping containers. Their innovative approach utilises aeroponics to reduce water usage by 98% compared to traditional farming. By integrating renewable energy and advanced biomimicry-inspired cooling systems, they ensure year-round, high-quality crop production with minimal environmental impact.
