City gives greenlight for transfer of school, clinic sites to Western Cape Government
Over two years, the City has given the go-ahead for the transfer or leasing process of more than 80 school and clinic sites across Cape Town to the Western Cape Provincial Government. Read more below:
One such site is an erf in The Hague community in Delft, which will be used for the erection of a school. Another is a site in Wallacedene that will see the development of the Blue Ridge Educational Campus, which will consist of both a primary and high school, a healthcare facility, a multi-purpose hall, sports fields, club houses and a library.
‘The transfer of these sites to the relevant Western Cape Government departments will enable better management of the properties for the surrounding communities that they serve. These communities include Nyanga, Goodwood, Retreat, Bellville, Scottsdene, Durbanville, Crossroads, Khayelitsha, Masiphumelele and Valhalla Park.
‘This displays our commitment to leveraging land value for optimal use, particularly for education and healthcare provision. It is also wonderful to note that some of the sites being transferred will be used for the development of brand new schools and clinics. This will answer the needs of our growing communities in addition to providing job opportunities for the construction and maintenance of the facilities,’ said Alderman James Vos, the Mayoral Committee Member for the Economic Growth Directorate who facilitated the property transactions.
The property transactions are disposed of in terms of the Municipal Asset Transfer Regulations. The City Council opted to dispose of these properties to the Western Cape Government at a significant discount, in some instances at 10% of the market value, to champion socio-economic change.
