Economists have long emphasised the importance of small businesses and entrepreneurial spirit in driving economic growth. Not only does this alleviate the burden of job creation on national entities but it also provides opportunities to individuals who may not be able to secure employment at larger corporations.
Additionally, local business investment opportunities can be incredibly lucrative for financiers and investors.
Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are widely recognised as a crucial driving force for social and economic stability in South Africa and play a significant role in creating small business success stories.
Recognising their importance for social and economic stability, policymakers have increasingly focused on supporting SMMEs. A prime example of this is the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) initiative, particularly its focus on enterprise and supplier development. These pillars, coupled with appropriate tax policies, have resulted in SMMEs making a considerable and important difference to the South African economy.
Because of these efforts, the small business sector has made a significant contribution to the growth of the South African gross domestic product (GDP). In the last three and a half years, the City’s funding partnerships with high-growth industry organisations facilitated R25.4 billion in investments, creating 32,300 jobs in Cape Town. In the City’s new ‘Building for Jobs’ Budget 2024/25, over R64 million is proposed to support partner organisations driving skills and job creation in high-growth industries, including call centres, tourism, manufacturing, the green economy, and more.
