South Africa’s agricultural economy is a tapestry of diversity and resilience, and Cape Town plays a vital role in this dynamic sector. From rolling vineyards to the fertile plains, our agri-business sector encompasses a wide range of activities that contribute significantly to both local prosperity and global markets.

A Rich Tapestry of Agricultural Production

Cape Town’s agricultural landscape is as diverse as it is productive. We’re known for producing major grains, oilseeds, deciduous and subtropical fruits, world-class wines, citrus, and a variety of vegetables. Our livestock production, including cattle, dairy, sheep, and poultry, further enriches our agricultural tapestry. This diversity not only ensures food security but also drives economic growth through exports and value-added services.

Reaching Global Markets

In 2018, South Africa’s agricultural exports totalled a substantial $11.1 billion, with citrus, wine, table grapes, corn, and wool leading the charge. Cape Town is a key player in this export-driven economy, facilitating the movement of about 45% of South Africa’s agricultural exports. The province’s agri-business sector alone contributes approximately 24% to the regional GDP and plays a vital role in employment, accounting for 18% of jobs.

Cape Town is a key player in this export-driven economy. In 2022, Cape Town’s exports (about 21%, or R23.67 billion) came from agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors. Notably, the agriculture sector, along with the finance sector, exhibited the strongest growth between 2017 and 2022, with average annual growth rates of 2.9% and 2.8%, respectively. This performance is particularly impressive considering the broader economic slowdown experienced after the Covid-19 pandemic, where most industries faced challenges in recovery.

A Foundation of Infrastructure and Innovation

Cape Town’s agricultural success is built on a strong foundation of infrastructure and a commitment to innovation. We have world-class transport networks, including road, rail, sea, and air routes, ensuring efficient supply chain management and export logistics. Modern processing facilities and a cold-chain infrastructure maintain the quality of our perishable goods, making us competitive in the global market.

A Hub of Knowledge and Innovation

Cape Town’s commitment to agricultural excellence goes beyond the fields and farms. We’re home to leading universities that nurture the next generation of agri-business leaders and drive cutting-edge research in areas like food sciences, biotechnology, and viticulture. These institutions act as incubators for innovation, supporting collaboration between academia, industry, and government to develop sustainable agricultural practices that enhance productivity and environmental stewardship.

Cultivating a Sustainable Agri-Business Sector

Sustainable farming practices and responsible resource management are at the heart of Cape Town’s agricultural strategy. The Western Cape Department of Agriculture actively supports these initiatives, providing funding and resources to ensure the long-term viability and socio-economic stability of our agricultural sector.

Ripe with Agri-Business Opportunities

Despite the challenges of climate change and infrastructure constraints, the outlook for South African agri-business remains positive. The increasing global demand for agricultural products and shifting trade policies present significant growth opportunities. Key areas for agri-business to explore include renewable energy (particularly solar), electrification of operations, and smart farming technologies. The Western Cape is a leading green economy and provides a supportive environment and resources for agri-businesses to thrive.
