Access free tech training at Africa’s first ever Amazon Web Services Skills Centre in Cape Town

Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, joined Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities Mireille Wenger, and Amazon Web Services leadership to cut the ribbon at the Amazon Web Services Skills Centre in Cape Town CBD, the tech company’s third such training hub and its first outside the United States.

The centre will have dedicated, in-person cloud learning spaces where people can find out more about cloud computing and career opportunities within the industry.

‘Amazon’s mission to equip 29 million people across the globe with cloud computing skills aligns with that of the City of Cape Town: to help as many Capetonians access the skills they will need for existing and future industries. I first visited the Amazon data centres’ construction sites in 2018 and it has been inspiring to witness the tech giant’s continued growth and investment in our metro,’ said Alderman Vos.

All training offered is free to the public and includes courses on entry-level IT skills right through to an essential understanding of cloud computing for business leaders.

The centre features a variety of interactive learning spaces that show how the cloud supports a variety of fields including space exploration, gaming, machine learning, and cybersecurity. Learners can also take courses to earn an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification, increasing their employability for a booming industry.

The centre also offers career coaching and hosts networking events with local employers and workforce development organisations to connect people with job placement opportunities.

‘Skills development is a key priority for the City of Cape Town and we are committed to not just training for training’s sake, but to providing a skills pipeline for the sectors that are contributing to economic growth. Thank you to Amazon Web Services for choosing Cape Town to be part of this incredible new chapter and helping to upskill more people. I look forward to seeing people of all ages and backgrounds take up this incredible opportunity,’ said Alderman Vos.
