Cape Town Moves Ahead with Landmark Health Technology Park in Ndabeni
The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, James Vos, has confirmed that the Mayoral Committee (MayCo) has approved a major step forward in unlocking the development potential of underutilised municipal land through the establishment of a new Health Technology Park in Ndabeni.
Located on the corner of Oude Molen and Diesel Road, the proposed development will transform the site into a hub for medical and biotech innovation, positioning Cape Town as a leader in health technology and biomanufacturing.
MayCo has recommended the transfer of the City-owned land to the Biological and Vaccines Institute of Southern Africa (BioVac), a leading biopharmaceutical company specialising in vaccine production and advanced medical research. The final report will now go before full Council for approval.
BioVac’s expertise spans the full value chain, from product development and clinical trials through to large-scale commercial manufacturing for both local and international markets.
According to Vos, this initiative marks a strategic milestone for Cape Town’s economic growth agenda.
“The Health Technology Park will not only revitalise a currently unused site but also attract investment, drive innovation, and create jobs in a critical growth sector for both the City and the country,” said Vos. “This transaction represents one of the most significant steps yet in positioning Cape Town as a leading centre for health technology and biomanufacturing in South Africa.”
The precinct will feature offices, laboratories, research centres, and manufacturing facilities for health-related products. It aims to bring together researchers, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers in a single, collaborative space to strengthen Cape Town’s health innovation ecosystem.
Vos added that the decision followed a thorough process of valuations, public participation, and consultation with stakeholders and departments. “This is about putting underutilised public land to work in a way that supports new investment, job creation, and the growth of a high-potential industry in Cape Town.”
