New facility drives green mobility in Cape Town
The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, officiated at the opening of a facility in Paarden Eiland for Everlectric, a local business that helps companies cost-effectively transition to electric vehicles. The facility marks a significant step forward in the City’s clean energy and green mobility drive. Read more below:
Everlectric offers an integrated solution for businesses, packaging electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and innovative financing options to make commercial fleet electrification viable. The company already services well-known clients such as Woolworths and recently secured venture financing through Edge Growth, a catalytic partner in the Green Outcomes Fund, which is managed by GreenCape, the City’s green economy partner.
‘Everlectric embodies the kind of innovation that the City’s Economic Growth Directorate aims to support. The company demonstrates how local ingenuity can drive sustainability while building jobs and skills. Their success shows that the green economy is not a distant goal, it’s happening right here in Cape Town,’ said Alderman Vos.
Referring to data from NAAMSA (The Automotive Business Council, formerly known as the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa), Alderman Vos highlighted record new energy vehicle sales in 2023 and an 88% increase in sales during the third quarter of 2024 compared with the same period the previous year.
‘These figures are proof that the shift toward electric mobility is well under way and that the market for cleaner transport solutions is rapidly expanding,’ said Alderman Vos.
Everlectric’s growth aligns with the City’s broader economic development agenda, which focuses on three key areas:
- Supporting high-growth sectors such as renewable energy and advanced manufacturing through funding and technical partnerships.
- Expanding trade and market access by securing new air routes, tourism links, and business connections.
- Developing local suppliers and entrepreneurs to grow Cape Town-made products and services that can compete globally.
Alderman Vos also credited GreenCape for helping to create the conditions for businesses like Everlectric to thrive. GreenCape provides industry support, market insights, and investor facilitation within the green economy, work that has helped attract more than R70 billion in investment and create over 22 000 jobs across South Africa.
‘The partnership between the City, GreenCape, and innovators like Everlectric shows how strategic collaboration can generate tangible economic impact.
‘It’s about turning policy into practice and ensuring that our local economy is open to investments in developing industries. In addition, the City’s own energy initiatives, including solar projects in Paardevlei and Atlantis, waste-to-energy programmes, and upgrades to the Steenbras Hydro Plant, are building resilience while stimulating opportunities for enterprise and skills development.
‘The Everlectric opening represents more than just a business expansion. It’s a sign that Cape Town’s economic transition is charging ahead, powered by local innovation, sustainable investment, and a shared commitment to growth,’ said Alderman Vos.
